Should men curling teams have to win their Club Championship to be able to curl in the Brier? Should women curling teams have to win their Club Championship to be able to curl in the Tournament of Hearts? Should the Brier have a Team Canada? Should the Tournament of Heart have a Team Canada?

It is the intention of your board of directors to make regular communication available to all members who have access to a computer. Using an e-mail newsletter is an effective, low-coast method for staying in touch. Since there are no mailing and printing costs involved it is also gentle to our bottom-line. Another benefit is the almost instantaneous deliveries that e-mail offers. You don't have to worry whether the post office will get the newsletter delivered on time. Keeping in mind your board of directors is responsible to you; even if you don't have e-mail. Questions and comments are welcomed by President Dan MacPherson, Vice-President John Stockman, Treasurer Phyllis Tower, and Secretary Horace Constable, as well as directors Larry Kelly, Ray Brown and Frank Arsenault.

MCA improvements continue
Curling club hopes to restore facility it its former glory
Moncton Curlers' Association members intend to restore New Brunswick's oldest curling club to its former glory with an ambitious plan that should be completed by September.
The club's brine header and rink pipe project is well under way. Two new six-inch headers will provide freezing brine (salt solution) to 32,000 feet of new one-inch pipe. The headers distribute the brine through the pipes under the ice surface.
The brine solution rusts metal pipes over time and replacement is a normal occurrence. MCA's old pipes were installed in 1960. The new pipes, manufactured by Rehau Industries Inc. of Port Elgin, are plactic.
"This work is long overde," said MCA President Dan MacPherson. "We couldn"t continue without it. Only our Iceman Greg Lamkey kept us going the last few years."
The project began July 23rd with the removal of the walkway at the home end of the five sheets of ice. Work on the removal of the old headers and the old pipes began a week later. In total, 30 tons of steel were removed.
Installation of the headers and the rink pipe began this month. Most of the work is being done by club volunteers under the direction of Electrical & Refrigeration Services Ltd. of Moncton.
"The entire project, slated for a mid-September completion, would not be possible withour the dedication of MCA's membership," MacPherson said. "The volunteers are the reason the club is on the way to regaining its status as a top curling facility - much as it was when it opened in 1881," he said.
Over the last 18 years three MCA Presidents have been elected President of the Canadian Curling Association. Dr. Ed Steeves served in 1989-91 and Moncton Mayor Lorne Mitton in 1994-95. Al Forsythe, was CCA President, until this June.
MCA is located at 358 Lutz Street. New members are welcome.
In case you have not heard, Moncton has been awarded the 2009 Ford World Men's Curling Championship. So mark you calendar now. The event, with the help of curling volunteeers, will be staged April 4-12 in the Moncton Coliseum - the site of several previous curling championships, including a memorable 1985 Labatt Brier and the 1980 Air Canada Silver Broom.
Items for inclusion in future newsletters should be sent to MCAcurl@canoemail.com or left at the bar (in an envelope marked to the attention of Ray Brown). News of upcoming events, bonspiel results, etc. will be appreciated.

Enter your team in the John Lambert Memorial Men's Bonspiel scheduled for January 16-17. Send your entry to Ray Brown at isrbrown@rogers.com or leave your entry at the Bar at MCA. Come out for a great curling.
Ray is taking individual entries for steak curling on Mondays and Fridays at 10 AM. You can reach him at the same e-mail address or by phone at 384-2682.
Anytime you can not make it to a game of curling, please get a spare. You should phone your skip with the name of the spare who is curling for you. Never phone your skip and tell him you are not curling unless you have a spare or you have phoned at least a dozen people to get a spare. Yes! you are responsible for getting a spare whenever you can not make it to a curling game you are scheduled to play at MCA or any other curling club. Make deals with other curlers such as I will curl for you if you will curl for me.
It is good curling etiquette to get a spare when you can not make it to your game. Know the proper thing to do for each curling situtation. In club curling the curlers apply the rules. They do not have referees, umpires, and judges to inforce the rules. They play by the rules and settle all disputes by admitting when they break the rules. Try to memberize the 37 curling rules found on the Curling Etiquette Page. Read the curling rule book and memberize the rules. Practice until you can make all the curling shots that could come up in a game.

Forty-eight youngsters from St. Pat's Centre curl Mondays at 2 PM. Spectators and volunteers are always welcome.
